However, to do so, you’ll need to take some important precautions to protect your extraction site(s) and avoid infection. Here’s how you can reduce your risk of experiencing a dangerous, painful condition known as dry socket, so you can heal as quickly and comfortably as possible!

What is Dry Socket?

Following your tooth extraction, you will have an empty spot in your gums known as a socket. This is the space where the tooth once was. While this opening will eventually heal and the gum tissue should close back up, in the meantime it will protect itself by developing a clot or scab. This shields the gums and the underlying bone from things like bacteria, food debris lowering your risk of infection.

Unfortunately, sometimes this clot can come out before your gums have healed, exposing the bone and causing a great deal of pain. This condition is known as dry socket, and if it happens to you, it’s important to see your dentist as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

How to Lower Your Risk of Dry Socket

While there’s no way to completely prevent dry socket, there are still many things you can do to keep your blood clot intact and reduce your risk of this painful condition:

Don’t drink from a straw until your dentist has given you the green light to do so, as this can put undue pressure on your extraction site and dislodge your clot prematurely.

Don’t smoke, vape, chew tobacco, or use dabs for at least a week post extraction. These can all thin your blood and make it harder for clots to form.

Don’t touch or clean your extraction site for at least 24 hours post-procedure. When you do brush and floss, be extremely careful cleaning around the socket.

Don’t touch your extraction site(s) with your fingers, tongue, or toothbrush for at least 24 hours.

If you’ve received sutures to close your extraction site, do not attempt to pull on them or remove them yourself. Dissolving sutures should go away on their own within a week or so, but if they don’t, contact your dentist for help!

Don’t eat anything too hard or sticky for several days after your extraction, and chew on the opposite side of the mouth as your removed teeth for several days.

What Should I Do if I Lose My Blood Clot?

Should you lose your blood clot early, or if the pain in your extraction site gets worse instead of better, be sure to call your dentist as soon as you can. Dry socket doesn’t just hurt; it can also increase your risk of developing an infection during healing and must be treated quickly to avoid further complications.

Remember, dry socket can be extremely painful and slow down the healing process after extraction. Thus, to avoid this dangerous complication, be sure to follow the aftercare instructions provided by your dentist and use the helpful tips mentioned above, and you’ll have the best chance for a successful, comfortable healing process.

About Dr. Uldrikson

Dr. Barry Uldrikson earned his undergraduate degree at Walla Walla University and his dental degree from the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry.
